Eight-time ASC Award Nominee David Stockton is as passionate about the art of cinematography itself as he is decorated in his field. His most recent ASC Award nomination for Outstanding Cinematography was for his work on the third season of FX’s Mayans M.C. (directed by Michael Dinner). He previously won the ASC Award for his work on the Eleventh Hour pilot. Recent work includes Amazon’s sweeping fantasy epic The Wheel of Time, Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic The Stand, the gritty crime drama Justified: City Primeval, and the superhero realms of Gotham with director and longtime collaborator Danny Cannon. Not bound by a single genre, Stockton brings heart and spectacle together in his work.

Stockton honed his skills for ten years in the commercial and music video world before transitioning into narrative. His work in these genres took him to four continents across both hemispheres, from mountaintops to deserts to the jungles of Thailand. This breadth of experience comes not only from the variety of locales, but the variety of people surrounding him. They taught Stockton to find the humanity in everything around him. His experiences allowed him to form deep connections with not only his crew, but with anyone who is drawn into his orbit.

Originally from Greenwich Village, New York, there was no shortage of artistic inspiration for Stockton as a child. He began shooting short films at the age of 10 when his fifth-grade teacher gave him a Super 8 camera. He developed his skills throughout high school, and from there attended NYU and the International Film Workshops in Rockport. His first industry jobs were working on sets as a PA. From there he cut his teeth as a gaffer and lighting cinematographer for industrial and promotional shoots in New York, before he packed his bags and made the fateful trek to Los Angeles.

A true artist, Stockton is inspired by life itself and the world around him. He endeavors to tap into the personal “truth” of each piece. Beyond the years of technique he has honed over his career, Stockton seeks to paint with light and movement in his own unique voice while never losing sight of the humanity at the center of all art. His extensive travels and diversity of experience give him an adaptability to create no matter how remote the location or how inclement the weather. Above all else, in an industry, an artform, where you must think outside the box, to Stockton “there is no box”.

Stockton resides in Venice, California today. He has never lost the passion for filmmaking that first sparked when he was a child. He hopes to pass along new opportunities and lessons learned to the next generation of filmmakers.
